The young adult adaptation of the
hopeful and refreshingly candid bestselling memoir by the husband of a former
Democratic presidential candidate about growing up gay in his small Midwestern
town. Completely rewritten with new stories, including resources for readers,
parents, and teachers.
Growing up, Chasten Glezman Buttigieg didn’t always fit in. He felt different
from his father and brothers, who loved to hunt and go camping, and out of
place in the rural, conservative small town where he lived. Back then, blending
in was more important than feeling seen.
So, when Chasten realized he was gay, he kept that part of himself hidden away
for a long, painful time. With incredible bravery, and the support of his loved
ones, Chasten eventually came out—and when he did, he learned that being true to
himself was the most rewarding journey of all.
Finding acceptance and self-love can seem like a tremendous challenge, but it’s
never impossible. With honesty, courage, and warmth, Chasten relays his
experience of growing up in America and embracing his identity, while inspiring
young people across the country to do the same.

Honestly, I'm not one for politics, but even with that said, this was an interesting read. Yes, you get a behind the scenes look at he campaign trail as experienced first hand, the trials, tribulations, ugliness, and happy times, but it's MORE than that.
This is the story of someone taking ownership of their life. This is the story of someone who grew up in times that being different than the "norm" was frowned upon, and, let's face it, it's still true today to certain extents. This is the story of someone that faced their "demons", chased away the bad times with GOOD, and ultimately found their happiness. I may not have known anything about Chasten before this book, but you can't walk away from it without having a clearer picture of where we've made progress, and where we still struggle to achieve better heights of humanity. No one should feel as if they have to hide who they truly are. No one should go without the support of others, the love of family (chosen or blood), or sense of security that should be a given part of being a part of the human race. I mean, HUMAN is a big part of HUMANE...and yet it's left out of so many spaces for adults, as well as the kiddos from the next generations.
In sharing his story, Chasten has made it possible for others that see themselves reflected here to perhaps speak out sooner, and ultimately embrace everything life has to offer with an open heart, while helping to open the minds of others.
