AWARENESS TOUR: ForeverChild by Mark Lavine

Today, we're taking on a BIGGER title currently touring the blogosphere with The Children's Book Review! It's bigger because generally we're working with Picture Books or Chapter Books on these tours, but not today! This time, we've a part dystopian, part sci-fi Young Adult novel that really makes you think, while pulling you right into the story.  Ladies and gents, today's AWARENESS TOUR featured title...

Mark Lavine
Ages: 13-18 | 315 Pages
Publisher: Mark Lavine (2022)
ISBN-13: 9798218130947

About the book...
What if you could live hundreds of years – but never age?

In the year 2315 you can live for hundreds of years and never age past eleven. That is, if you’re one of the lucky ones. But the not-so-lucky ones are disturbingly close, and they’re threatening your safety, security, and even your deepest beliefs. Soon, it will be all-out war.

Among a chosen few, life expectancy is now hundreds of years; these are the forever children, and science has found a way to keep them in a nearly endless childhood state. Secure in their giant hives, they have left the outsiders, who must live natural lives, to fend for themselves.

This is the story of Kianno and Seelin, two youths who find themselves trading places in this strange new world, one leading the life of a forever child and the other growing up in the anarchy of the outside world.

Their lives come together in surprising and unexpected ways, as they both become involved in a fierce struggle between the two worlds.

Discover for yourself a future world of eternal childhood, and the nightmares and battles which erupt from this seemingly innocent society.

But the quest for endless youth comes at a cost.

How will Kianno and Seelin survive in this battle for eternal life?

This story hit me as a little bit Divergent, a bit of The Giver, and a whole lot of intrigue!

We begin with an unfortunate accident, part man-made, part nature made, that changes the lives of several people that day. Some are ended, some are altered for the better, and others are simply given a direction and told to go.  My heart broke with Sophia's as things unfolded, but I applaud her valiant efforts to try and connect once again.  When she finds "Seelin", it's the desperate cry of a mother's heart that he's answering more so than the feeling behind this name. As life continues, milestones are reached, but there's always an emptiness that aches and questions that need answers, and yet...

To bring attention to your self in this new community is to invite trouble. The Hive is there to provide consistency, nourishment, and longer lives...but at what costs? Is it merely experiences that are being forfeited? Is it more the things and situations that help us change and grow? People here are generally stuck as they are, but there are some that fight back. There are some that won't take these changes lying down. There are some that feel that breaking down the walls, and restoring order is priority number one, and they'll take any means necessary to achieve it.

All in all, an intriguing tale that takes you for a ride, and won't let go! You're presented with so many things that aren't far off the mark of what we can accomplish, but perhaps the better question is if we should? Playing god isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially when you're around for the fallout!
