AWARENESS TOUR: Sylvia Locke's Cinderella and the Evil Fairy Godmother by David Horn, Illustrated by Judit Tondora - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!

Once upon a time, there was a blog, and the blogger behind same said blog enjoyed bringing great reads to those in her readerdom.  That blog is this site, and the blogger is myself...happy to meet you!  Our second tour of the day is coming in hot like the faked report cards that Sylvia constructs to enable her plans to proceed.  That's right.  It's AWARENESS TOUR time with The Children's Book Review, and we're getting our twisted fairytale on as Cinderella takes on another look that's still decidedly fun!  Ready or not, here comes today's ebook of choice and blog tour guest...

About the book...
Fairytale Land’s baddest girl is about to head to a prince’s ball. A modern, twisted retelling of Cinderella.

Once upon a time in Fairytale Land, there lived Sylvia Locke—the baddest girl around. So bad that her grandparents have shipped her off to live with her uptight Aunt Marjorie and two goody-two-shoes step-cousins. When an invitation to the prince’s ball arrives, Sylvia is determined to attend at any cost, even if it means enlisting the help of an evil fairy godmother (against Fairytale Land laws, but has that ever stopped her?). Along this chaotic quest, Sylvia stumbles into some unexpectedly imperfect friends. But will she also learn to appreciate those who truly care for her?

The second book in the Tairy Fails series of modern, twisted retelling that puts a hilarious, rebellious, new spin on the classic fairy tales. Perfect for elementary school kids and early chapter book readers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Middle Grade readers rejoice! Sylvia Locke is at it again, and this time the trouble she's getting into (*cough* causing *cough*) is all done up Cinderella style.  She's been sent to live with extended family to try to teach her some manners, and goodness...things she's not exactly picking up.  When that fated invitation comes for the prince's ball, she's determined to not only go, but be the belle of it all...just her way, hence the evil fairy godmother enlisted.  Hey, she's done her own misdeeds in the past, including the current story and those poor step-cousins that thought they were failing their classes all of a sudden, so getting someone else to up the power behind the intentions wasn't that much of a stretch.  What she didn't count on was driving away at midnight in a Merkury Sable formerly known as a bicycle, and trying to escape the revelation of what her shimmery tracksuit was just a few hours before.  Yes, things get quite sticky in a hurry, but if there's one thing you can count on, it's Sylvia getting out of a jam in the least likely means possible.
By book's end, the prince has seen the light, Sylvia has some new friends in high places, and Farmington is getting another chance, along with Gram Gram and Gramps.  It turns out that happily ever afters come in all shapes and sizes...even ones befitting a Fairytale Land resident with a tendency towards badness.  If you like your fairytales with a bit of a twist, you've found the right series for you!
*"A dreamy, sublimely written tale." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review
From New York Times bestselling, award-winning author Jennifer Donnelly comes a revolutionary, gender-swapped retelling of Beauty and the Beast that will forever change how you think about beauty, power, and what it really means to follow your heart.
What makes a girl "beastly?" Is it having too much ambition? Being too proud? Taking up too much space? Or is it just wanting something, anything, too badly?
That's the problem Arabella faces when she makes her debut in society. Her parents want her to be sweet and compliant so she can marry well, but try as she might, Arabella can't extinguish the fire burning inside her -- the source of her deepest wishes, her wildest dreams.
When an attempt to suppress her emotions tragically backfires, a mysterious figure punishes Arabella with a curse, dooming her and everyone she cares about, trapping them in the castle. As the years pass, Arabella abandons hope. The curse is her fault -- after all, there's nothing more "beastly" than a girl who expresses her anger -- and the only way to break it is to find a boy who loves her for her true self: a cruel task for a girl who's been told she's impossible to love.
When a handsome thief named Beau makes his way into the castle, the captive servants are thrilled, convinced he is the one to break the curse. But Beau -- spooked by the castle's strange and forbidding ladies-in-waiting, and by the malevolent presence that stalks its corridors at night -- only wants to escape. He learned long ago that love is only an illusion. If Beau and Arabella have any hope of breaking the curse, they must learn to trust their wounded hearts, and realize that the cruelest prisons of all are the ones we build for ourselves.
I ADORE a great fairytale redo, don't you?
I mean, we get the elements we know and love, but a new twist to spice it up and keep it interesting on a new level. 😏 Decidedly, my cup of tea. A few years back, I read a release from this author in this same subgenre and was hooked! POISONED... perhaps you've heard of it? If not, once you've devoured this tale, take your chance on that one; you won't be sorry. Anywho... Jennifer Donnelly does not disappoint!
Once again, we're given a dose of familiar, this time in the vein of Beauty and the Beast (and what bookish gal doesn't like that story...or at least the library?!), with several twists...the Beast and Belle in role reversals, and the former cursed for all the wrong reasons, while the latter actually was involved in thefts, but not exactly by choice.  Still, there's hope to be had for all,  if one can look below the surface...her's being the outspoken woman that society says is a big NO, and his being five finger discounts, and manipulation by use of his beauty. No one is perfect, but these two are certainly far from being only what they've been labeled. I was glued to the page as everything unfolded, and by book's end, happily bidding them adieu... until next time. 😉
A great pick for fans of the genre and Young Adult readers alike!
"A whimsical twist on a classic fairy tale with plenty of twists, turns, and sass for early chapter readers.” – Kirkus Reviews
RED ALERT FOR FAIRY TALE LAND: Sylvia Locke is out and ready to cause mischief.
Once upon a time in Fairy Tale Land, there lived a very bad girl indeed. Sylvia Locke may have been abandoned by her adventuring parents but that’s no excuse for being mean to her loving grandparents, rude to everyone at school, and even bullying rare magical creatures. Right?
One day, when out on a break-and-enter job at the Bear family’s house, Sylvia happens upon a magical mirror that turns out to be more than she bargained for. Could even a kid like Sylvia find a friend? Could some warm and fuzzies change her heart?
The first book in Tairy Fails, a modern fractured fairy tale humor series that will have elementary school kids and early chapter book readers screaming with laughter.
Reviews:
"Will wow middle grade readers—and transform them into instant devotees of the next in the series.'" - BookLife Reviews
"Original action and humor at their best . . . highly recommended for elementary chapter book readers seeking a fresh, original voice and novel atmosphere in their fantasy reading." - Midwest Book Review
"Will have readers doubled over with laughter as they follow one very bad girl, Sylvia Locke . . . This is a gem of a magical story that will enchant young readers." - ReadersFavorite (5 Star Review)
"Families will love the comedic spin the chapter book takes on a classic fairytale. It deserves more than five stars! I'll be on the lookout for book two in the Tairy Fails series, and I know once your family and class read this story, they will be, too." - Superkambrook (Kam's Place)
"The perfect story of the pains of a growing teen, with characters based on those we all know and love." - ReadersFavorite (5 Star Review)
"David's wonderful modern fairy tale will engage young readers and make their parents smile." - ReadersFavorite (5 Star Review)
I love the nod to fairytales we know and love, yet the twists afforded throughout. So, yes, they have recognizable features, but the overall tale is new and curious!
Sylvia Locke is an interesting character, as is her situation, but her single mindedness regarding Cookie Crispies 🍪  takes the cake...err, cookie. She's bound and determined to have her sugary cereal goodness, eat it too, and not have to serve it herself. Well, she sorta gets her wish... eventually, after several adventures in criminal activity, bad choices in general, and unexpected friendships.  That's right. Good can happen even if you are rumored to be cursed. 😨 Never fear, the Wizard of FLOSZ wouldn't steer us wrong, so while there is adventure to be had, there are also lessons to be learned, aside from the obvious one of breaking and entering still being wrong!
Whether you're a fan of fairytales, love a good redo, or simply enjoy time in a faraway land with a cast you'll remember, and an outcome you won't see coming, this is the tale for you!
