BOOK Start Your Week with a DOUBLE REVIEW!

It’s that crazy hectic end of the weekend (for some...others are already working, hello retail life!), back to school, back to the uber busy daily schedule that is life, and with everything we already have going on, adding one more thing to the mix can feel like that proverbial straw on the camel’s back. I know for me, recently, the factors I mentioned weren’t the weight, but having a parent under the weather, another in the hospital, catching the VID myself, and the work world, the beautiful land that is blogging could feel like that bit of straw. Yep, I said it, but what with the plethora of books, I want to cover, let alone read, it can get that way sometimes...but it doesn’t mean I’m not reading, enjoying the adventures, or that the book isn’t worth your time; more often than not, it’s quite the opposite.

So today, I’m taking a moment to highlight in review a title that jumped into print at the end of last month, and one that’s about to hit bookstore and virtual shelves this week. They are both Young Adult Fiction titles, no magic involved other than that which live can provide, but the other similarity they share is a deep seated message regarding the importance of MENTAL HEALTH. Don’t worry, there are other tropes aplenty running freely throughout, but this is one STRONG vein they share, and I think it’s very important for the audiences that will be consuming it. Ladies and gents, let get the bookish fun started...

About the book…
Eloise Deane is the worst and doesn’t care who knows it. She’s grumpy, prefers to be alone, and is just slogging through senior year with one goal: get accepted to USC and move to California. So when her guidance counselor drops the bombshell that to score a scholarship she’ll desperately need, her applications require volunteer hours, Eloise is up for the challenge. Until she’s paired with LifeCare, a volunteer agency that offers social support to lonely seniors through phone calls and visits. Basically, it’s a total nightmare for Eloise’s anxiety.

Eloise realizes she’s made a huge mistake—especially when she’s paired with Austin, the fellow volunteer who’s the sunshine to her cloudy day. But as Eloise and Austin work together to keep Marianne Landis—the mysterious former frontwoman of the 1970s band the Laundromats—company, something strange happens. She actually…likes Marianne and Austin? Eloise isn’t sure what to do with that, especially when her feelings toward Austin begin to blur into more-than-friends territory.

And when ex-girlfriends, long-buried wounds, and insecurities reappear, Eloise will have a choice to make: go all in with Marianne and Austin or get out before she gets hurt.

πŸ˜’   Eloise and Austin... πŸ˜ƒ
...grumpy sunshine dynamic...
...to say the VERY least.

She's...just trying to reach her goals for college. He's trying to spread a little sunshine into the lives of those who need it. They're both trying to unintentionally drive the other insane, well, at first, but sometimes "like" starts off that way. πŸ˜‰

I loved how REAL these two felt, along with the cast of characters.  You felt like they were your friends too, like their triumphs included you for the high fives, and their failures sank you into that same pit of despair. The vibrancy of each of them was palpable, making it easy to step into their shoes, but I also loved the story WITHIN the story regarding Marianne, who was definitely a huge part of those larger than life vibes! You cared for each of them equally, hoped for the best regardless of the missteps they took, and, in the end, were happy to see things come together just like you always knew... okay, so I didn't ALWAYS know, but I hoped, and sometimes that's just enough!

About the book…
Eighteen-year-old Rory Quinn-Morelli doesn’t want to die; she wants refuge from reality for even a minute: the reality where she survived the car crash eight months ago, and her best friend, Liv, didn’t. Yet her exasperating mother won’t believe the Xanax incident was an accident, and her therapist is making it increasingly hard to maintain the detached, impenetrable “cold girl” faΓ§ade she adopted from Liv. After she unintentionally reconnects with Liv’s parents, Rory must decide: will she keep Liv’s and her secrets inside, or will she finally allow herself to break? And if she breaks, what will she unearth amid the pieces?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Rory and Liv…
...the best of friends, and yet…
...and yet.

This book had so much darkness to get through, so much guilt to shed, so much light to let in, and yet, we reach some of those points, but not all...and THAT’S OKAY. It’s okay to not have the perfect life. It’s okay to have things to work through. It’s okay to need others, ask for help, and let people in. It’s okay even if you don’t just so long as you don't let yourself get so lost you miss out on LIVING. Loss hits everyone differently for various reasons, but it hits hard nonetheless.

I appreciated seeing Rory's journey from the inside (before the accident) and the outside (afterwards). It gave a new perspective for those that haven't been as closely touched by tragedy, while making it easier to relate to for those that have yet allowing them to also see that falling down doesn't mean you stop trying to get back up. Aside from the heartache, there were other "me too" moments for readers. From the hallowed experience of high school to the triumphs and challenges of discovering just who you are, who you love, and where you fit in, there's something that everyone can touch with a modicum of understanding... making it a surprisingly powerful read!

It's not often that I'm surprised by a book I'm reading.  Okay, wait...that's not right...I AM surprised by books that I read, the story they contain, and the skill of the writer, but what I mean is that I was unexpected surprised by this one.  I shouldn't have been...not expecting it, that is...because I read the author's previous release and really enjoyed that one, but I guess it had been long enough that my mind wasn't prepared...nor my heart.  Ladies and gents, I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the  Rockstar Book Tour promotion featuring the latest release by author Lynn Painter! Check out my review, visit the other sites on the tour, and make sure to enter the giveaway!

THE DO-OVER

Release Date: November 15, 2022
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, Kindle, Audible, B&NiBooks, KoboTBD, Bookshop.org

In this riotous young adult romp for fans of Recommended for You and A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow, a teen girl has the worst Valentine’s Day ever—only to relive it over and over again.

After living through a dumpster fire of a Valentine’s Day, Emilie Hornby escapes to her grandmother’s house for some comfort and a consolation pint of Ben & Jerry’s. She passes out on the couch, but when she wakes up, she’s back home in her own bed—and it’s Valentine’s Day all over again. And the next day? Another nightmare V-Day.

Emilie is stuck in some sort of time loop nightmare that she can’t wake up from as she re-watches her boyfriend, Josh, cheat on her day after day. In addition to Josh’s recurring infidelity, Emilie can’t get away from the enigmatic Nick, who she keeps running into—sometimes literally—in unfortunate ways.

How many days can one girl passively watch her life go up in flames? And when something good starts to come out of these terrible days, what happens when the universe stops doling out do-overs?

Reviews:

"Painter plucks readers’ every heartstring, from writing a sweet love story between two teens with very different views on romance to honestly depicting how Emilie’s parents’ messy divorce has impacted her feelings of self-worth. Italicized confessions at the beginnings of various chapters prove there is a playful side to Emilie that is further brought out by Nick, whose constant teasing leads to flirty banter...unequivocally hilarious and delightful." -- Kirkus Reviews

"Throughout, Emilie struggles to navigate her parents’ acrimonious divorce, and the resulting financial precarity and blow to her self-worth. By combining these personal trials with a lighthearted love story, Painter delivers a thoughtfully elevated romantic jaunt." -- Publishers Weekly

πŸ’˜   πŸ’˜   πŸ’˜   πŸ’˜   πŸ’˜

I'd describe this story as a Young Adult Contemporary Romance that centers on Valentine's Day with a Groundhog Day twist!  That's the movie not the holiday, in case you weren't sure of the reference.  Basically, our girl Emilie, through rather unusual circumstances, gets sucked into repeating Valentine's Day over, and over, and over, and...well, you get the picture.  WHY this happened to her is a mystery.  HOW does she break the cycle is the unanswerable question...until it's suddenly not in the most SPECTACULAR way possible.  I won't spoil it with a big reveal, but I promise, you'll see it coming when it's about to be the final repeat, even if Emilie can't see it coming.  Let's just say that she really gets the chance to LIVE OUT LOUD, and truthfully, isn't that something that all of us should strive for?  To be our authentic selves?

I loved the story from start to finish, even if I wasn't thrilled with how her initial Valentine's Day went down.  My word!  It's hard enough for those of us that are single, let alone those in relationships that harbor doubts!  Poor Emilie had way more than her share of bad news on that day, and so when the weirdness that was occurred, it was strange, but smile inducing because she had another shot.  The thing was, initially, she was so worried about why it was happening that she was missing the opportunities surrounding her.  Once she got her bearings, it was was delightful to see her progression through each day.  The chances she took, the statements she made, the way she took hold of her life and said YOU ARE MINE, I AM NOT YOURS and went with it!  Now, I'm not saying that going off the proverbial deep end is the answer...but being yourself is ALWAYS the answer.  there is not better version of you than the you that is true.  You can make improvements if YOU choose to.  You can change your hair, clothes, life path, mind, opinion, etcetera etcetera, but it's all in your hands.

A great story filled with life, love, and lessons you weren't expecting, as you join a fascinating young lady on the most adventurous day of her life...as of yet.

Title: LOVELESS

Author: Alice Oseman

Pub. Date: March 1, 2022

Publisher: Scholastic Press

Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook

Pages: 432

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, Kindle, AudibleB&NiBooks, KoboTBD, Bookshop.org

For fans of Love, Simon and I Wish You All the Best, a funny, honest, messy, completely relatable story of a girl who realizes that love can be found in many ways that don't involve sex or romance.

From the marvelous author of Heartstopper comes an exceptional YA novel about discovering that it's okay if you don't have sexual or romantic feelings for anyone . . . since there are plenty of other ways to find love and connection.

This is the funny, honest, messy, completely relatable story of Georgia, who doesn't understand why she can't crush and kiss and make out like her friends do. She's surrounded by the narrative that dating + sex = love. It's not until she gets to college that she discovers the A range of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum -- coming to understand herself as asexual/aromantic. Disrupting the narrative that she's been told since birth isn't easy -- there are many mistakes along the way to inviting people into a newly found articulation of an always-known part of your identity. But Georgia's determined to get her life right, with the help of (and despite the major drama of) her friends.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a story about learning to be yourself.
This is a story about realizing that there is no one way to be, nor is there a wrong way to be...you are you, and you are simply marvelous.
Georgia has been struggling through her teen years trying to fit the mold society expects her to fit.  Find a love interest.  Focus on said love interest.  Lose yourself in the mechanics of the relationship and available PDA opportunities.  Get physical.  Break up, make up, and do it all over again...and again...and again...until you find THE ONE.  Romcoms make it dreamy.  Novels make it swoon worthy.  The thing they don't show or tell is what happens to those hearts that don't find their other half...but are also perfectly content to not invest their time looking for them.  When Georgia gets out into the big, wide world of college, she learns about all the branches of the "love" tree, and that while she may have seemed like an anomaly back home, she is neither unique in her struggle, nor wrong in her feelings...or even the lack of them thereof.  Her journey is eye opening, and builds awareness of the many different ways that people can identify, so while I was "entertained", I was also educated, and when a Fiction novel can do that, how can you not reach for it?
Young Adult readers of all ages will find themselves in Georgia's journey, in one fashion or another, and whether you're still finding your true self or well set in your ways, I do believe you'll walk away from this story changed for the better.  Open your hearts and your minds as you meet Georgia (and friends!)...and she meets herself.
