McKenna and Jace…so not a combination you ever saw coming...but sometimes the best ones are. 

I adored how McKenna was so KICK BUTT. She shied away from the spotlight, and stuck to her circle of one friend, all thanks to unfortunate situations in her home life, and yes, I know that doesn’t sound kick butt worthy, but hang on. When she saw someone in trouble, someone in her direct path who wasn’t ever anything but nice to her, she stuck her neck out. She may not have saved them bodily, but she saved them from high school you-know-what because let’s face it, teens can be horrible to one another...okay, well HUMANS can be horrible to one another...and if you hit the bottom rung in the high school hierarchy, you better be prepared to duck your head or transfer schools. At least, it feels that way...so if someone reaches out a helping hand, or puts out a what’s-it-to-you attitude to fend that off for you, yeah...it changes the light you see them in. In this case, Jace isn’t seeing her for the first time, but rather beyond the outward changes to the girl he was friends with, the girl who gave him a valentine in the lower grades, the girl who has gorgeous eyes, a smile that dazzles when shared, and just really gets him. Yeah...he’s got it bad, but he can’t can he? They’re on different ends of the social status, and even her newfound, unintended rise to glory by claiming authorship of the KOS phenom can’t change that...or can it? Maybe if they’re willing to say it does, it can be true? Maybe, just maybe, if they become the authors of their own lives, it wouldn’t even matter? 

Jace is a great kid too.  Grant it, he has some pretty thick headed friends, and yes, we can be judged by the company we keep, but that's something McKenna finds out along their journey.  Things aren't always as they seem, nor people as perceived.  I loved the fact that he was the mind behind the pen..and why not?  Why can't a guy pen stories like KOS?  Why can't their be both action scenes and action scenes?  They can be equally perceptive if the talent is there, so I say why not?  There's no rule that says you have to act one way or another, so YOU BE YOU and I'LL BE ME.

I do believe I ran off with my own tangent there, but to put a point on it...I LIKED THIS STORY. The false impersonation was warranted, the get to know you phase believable, the way things all came tumbling down definitely realistic, and while the masses seemed quick to turn, I think it was the surrounding drama and the dramatic Say Anything moment that did them in. I mean how can you say no to a gesture THAT big?  All in all, a great read for Young Adult fans with reminders that not everything is as it seems, try not to place labels on others, and always be true to your self.

And not only that, but I’ve also caught the attention of Luca Russo, a godlike, football-playing hottie who claims he likes me just the way I am. Ummm...

But as I’m about to learn, playing around with things you don’t understand means when things go wrong—like really, very awfully wrong—you don’t know how to fix them.

Once upon a time, we've all had a crush.  Whether it was the boy/girl next door, the class jock, the study body president, or someone that flew under the radar, we've all had our hearts twisted in knots over the perfect guy/girl.  In the moment, we would've given anything for them to notice us, pay attention to us, heck...fall in LIKE with us...and the same goes in this story.  So is a love, or rather crush, spell that far out of reach?  What about when you see the thoughts thought, the desires written...start to come true?  Coincidence?  Or perhaps something more?  I wish I may, I wish I might...

It IS February, after all, so it's about time to break out all the books on love, about love, even somehow tethered to the idea of it, whether it be in the moment or forever...and this book fits the bill perfectly!  He's not looking for love, but has always wanted to approach her.  She's not looking for pretty much anything, and yet the sparks flying are too hot to ignore.  Their friends have their own agendas, as do their frenemies, but some things won't be denied.  Problem is, things have been cast in such a way that one can't help but wonder when realization is going to dawn.  I mean, it's one thing to wish for something, or rather someone, but to magically influence their attachment...I don't know about you, but I've seen one too many 90's teen witch movies to not realize SOMETHING will come of all this, and it won't be pretty.  It doesn't mean they won't survive the fallout...but it does mean some hearts are gonna get bruised along the way.  Let's just hope they don't break beyond repair.

Overall, I enjoyed the story.  Her unexpected abilities discovered by chance, the understanding that there is a responsibility built into it, but the teenage approach of "what could go wrong', totally felt right for the book.  I definitely was wondering about her Luca hookup...not that I was doubting our girl was worthy, but the timing was oh-so-convenient and the speed at which they achieved item status was faster than a speeding bullet.  I adored her bestie Ethan and all his prowess (so fierce!), cringed at her newly forged connection with Abby because really, how could that end well, and cheered when the sweet moments came about unexpectedly (way to go Luca for acting the gentleman!).  It was a teen story with teens acting like...well, teens...with a heathy dose of magical possibility blended in.  What more could you ask for?

But what I hate most is that I really don’t hate you at all.

What do you do when the one you loathe becomes the one you love?
Do you throw caution to the wind and embrace the change...
...or do you become super suspicious and question every move, motion, sign of devotion, and turn the whole thing inside out and on its head before it even has a chance?
In either case, I can't say I'd blame you.

Here we have Wren.  Tortured for years by Fuller and his crew, she's done fine for herself.  She has a few close friends, her academics, the cross country team, and a bright future ahead...until one day, a waylaid (or not!) handful of mashed potatoes brings her plans into question.  The only solution to wiping the slate clean...tutor the one person she swore she would never have anything to do with, Fuller James.  Thing is, things don't go exactly as planned, and feelings start to happen on both sides of this unexpected duo...but trusting in them is a tall order, and the faith placed there could seriously be a big mistake.  All is fair in love and war, right?

I ADORED Wren's character for all she was worth, and despite my inclination to fall victim to the title, I actually didn't mind Fuller either.  True, he gets better as the story goes on and that grand gesture is really above and beyond (even if slightly unbelievable), but it didn't really seem like he was such a bad person from the start, just misguided by some batting eyelashes and his high school fame.  When these two were able to see beneath the surface to what really makes them tick, it was a potential match made in heaven...no guarantees, but a definite pair in the making.  Marissa on the other hand (and even Fuller's cronies), I honestly couldn't stand!  She went from friend to foe and then started spreading vicious lies, and non-truths just to ride on the popularity train...but really, what good is being popular if your soul is black?  (Okay, now I'M being dramatic, but you get the point.)

    

All in all, a fun read that reminded me of all the great teen movies from yesteryear.  It's a lot She's All That with a helping of Can't Hardly Wait and even a dash of Clueless mixed in for good measure, but while the story may have some similarities, it still comes together for a sweetly satisfying read that'll leave you with a smile.  (Also, gotta say that cover is definitely a SWEET choice!)

"HOO-DOO SUNGLASSES"

“So what’s the story with these sunglasses? And who was that lady in the chapel?” I looked at Better Bertie beside me.

“You asked for help,” she said. “The glasses are that help, Alberta Einstein.”

    Hmm. She was mocking me. My kind of girl.

Ding. Fifth floor. 

As we entered the ICU, I gasped in shock. Better Bertie wasn’t the only one glowing. I stopped to stare at all the radiant people coming and going. Nurses and an orderly and visitors and an old woman hobbling past us with a walker.

“Freaky, huh?” Better Bertie said. All I could do was silently nod. “They are auras,” she said, walking two steps ahead of me. “Everyone, and everything that’s alive, has a certain… energy. The higher the energy, the brighter the aura.”

“I love it. I mean I really love it!” I said, watching the human light shows. 

“What’s that, young lady?”

Looking up, I saw the old woman with the walker, her aura a dull pea soup green.  She glared at me. “Did you just say you love me?”   

I hesitated, then said, “Well, yes.” 

The woman scoffed. But as she shuffled onward, her aura bloomed into a shiny emerald green. Better Bertie patted me on the back. “You’re a lot smarter than you look, Bertie.” Only no one heard her but me.  

My smile faded.
