Hi guys!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Today, we’re teaming up with Rachel’s Random Resources to spread the word about a story that begs you to live life off the list, making a good case for true spontaneity! Sound appealing? FABULOUS...I thought so too, and the cover is simply too cute to miss. With that in mind, let me intro the book so you can get to the juicy bits...in this case, an EXCERPT just for you! Ready, set, read all about it...
Falling for the Competition
by
Jen Smith
About the book...
It’s going to be the best summer ever for ambitious, overachieving Quinn. A huge history buff, not only has she landed her dream job interning in the archives department of the local castle, but her best friend will be working there too.
However, Quinn isn’t the only one to be working in Archives this summer; Quinn’s academic rival, Patrick, is sharing her office in Muniments. They’re competing for the Letter of Recommendation (singular) from the research historian that Quinn needs to get her dream future placement.
Their emotionally-loaded and competitive rivalry turns into a reluctant friendship, as they spend every day working together in silence (and sharing the occasional Twix). Until the Re-Enactors arrive. Between Patrick and Harry – the Golden Knight of the jousting team – Quinn’s carefully planned summer is thrown into complete disarray. Meanwhile, her best friend’s relationship may look perfect on the outside, but Quinn is starting to realise that there’s more going on than there seems.
Although Quinn is determined and single minded about planning every detail of her sparkling future, she comes to discover that the best things in life are the spontaneous ones – and that some people are more important than any Letter of Recommendation (singular) could ever be.

~~~ EXCERPT ~~~
Patrick swings to me abruptly, his eyes
dark and liquid with anger. “I don’t know why you let him do it.”
He’s a thunderstorm and I’ve never seen him like this before.
“It’s not like I asked
him to do that, I didn’t ask
him to kiss me in front of all those people.” I hiss, mindful of
Lisa in her office.
“It’s not like you stopped
him.” Patrick says, mirroring me leaning forward in my chair at
him.
“I tried, I couldn’t stop him.” I
had tried, but he had overridden my protests. Perhaps I thought if I
just get it over with then it will be done and I can leave. Perhaps I
didn’t want to make more of a spectacle of myself by making such a
fuss. Perhaps I should have worked harder on getting him off of me.
Perhaps I had been giving out all kinds of signals that said ‘woo
me Harry, this is the kind of stuff I like’. But I don’t think I
have recently, not one little bit.
“I would never have,” he stops
abruptly and runs his hands over his hair.
“You would never have what? Taken me
anywhere?” I say bitterly, challengingly. “Bothered to actually
work for the Letter of Recommendation instead of begging Lisa for
it?”
“Is that what you think? That I
wouldn’t take you anywhere?” He’s taken aback.
“Those were your exact words, Patrick,
so what am I supposed to think?” I snap. “And talking of things
that you said,
I cannot believe that you told Sadie about my project. I cannot
believe it. I asked you specifically
not to tell anyone, and you did. You lied to me that she was there
that night, and you told her.” I shrug at him, eyebrows not even
trying to hide my anger. It’s all coming out now.
“No,” he shakes his head. “A. I
asked Lisa for the Letter of Recommendation for you,
not for me. You want it more than me. B. I did not
tell Sadie, she guessed.” I snort, guessed,
really? Is that the best he can come up with? He takes a deep breath.
“We were together when I worked here last year, she knows the kind
of work we’re doing, I told her what I was doing and said you were
doing something different. She pushed and pushed and guessed. She can
read me so well, she knows me, and she said something about a map and
my face must have given it away. But I did NOT tell her. C.” He
ticks it off on his fingers. “I would never have overridden your
choice. It’s always your choice, Quinn.” He says, harsh but
nearly pleadingly, trying to make me understand.
I’m flame red because that’s the
real reason I’m upset with him. That he said to Harry he ‘wouldn’t
take me anywhere’, that he and his ex were gossiping about me. And
I’m angry with myself that I’ve let him see how much it upset me
by bringing it up now. Patrick hasn’t even dealt with that, he’s
just glossed over it completely.
About the author…
Jen lives in the Midlands with her husband and two children. With a Masters Degree in Medieval History, Jen loves castles and King John a little too much. Strangely un-British, she does not like tea, oranges or marzipan, but adores French cheese, guava juice and Chinese food (not together).
When not writing, Jen can often be found pointing out historical inaccuracies in period dramas, being a Lady that Lunches with close friends and playing board games with her family. Note: her handbags are always heavy due to multiple books (just in case she needs them).
