Why You Should Hook Young Readers with a Scavenger Hunt
By Mark Darden

Reading is an excellent way for kids to develop an eagerness for learning. One way to make reading fun and hook a young reader is to create stories that have a scavenger hunt theme.
In Elijah Goes to Cleveland, Elijah and his grandparents participate in a scavenger hunt throughout the city of Cleveland with the help of riddles and visual aids. It’s an exciting and intergenerational story that keeps kids turning pages.
I believe that scavenger hunts have many tangible benefits for kids. Here are just a few of the ways that they may help build life skills and a love of reading all at the same time:
  • Scavenger hunts can take kids on an adventure and simply bring joy and happiness.
  • Scavenger hunt theme stories can naturally incorporate drama, suspense, humor, and a resolution that will make reading fun for kids and adults.
  • A good scavenger hunt story can have many twists and turns that will have readers continuously turning the page.
  • Teamwork is a valuable life lesson that can be taught throughout a scavenger hunt. In Elijah Goes to Cleveland, Elijah must work with his grandparents to solve the riddles and find landmarks in the city. Also, a generational bridge between characters in this particular story adds another layer to the story.
  • Scavenger hunts can help develop problem-solving skills in a fun way.
  • Learning concepts that may have been taught by parents, educators, and other adults can be reinforced and lead to increased memory of those lessons.
  • Solving riddles encourages creative thinking.
In conclusion, scavenger hunts are beneficial in the development of young children and will make great stories that will be enjoyed. My goal for Elijah Goes to Cleveland is for kids to learn about the city and develop a curiosity to explore the world. I plan to write more books with Elijah exploring other cities in the future.

Sounds like a fun read. I love that Elijah is helped not by friends or siblings or parents but his grandparents.
