Week-END Treasure: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

Ahhhh, summer. School's out. The sun is up. Free time abounds for self-satisfying fun. Just relaxing. No worries. No cares. All the time in the world just waiting to be filled with your dreams, wants, and desires. Feel the breeze blowing and the sun warming your skin......

Okay....SNAP out of it! Summer does not officially start until June 21st (this year), regardless of what our cabin fever is telling us, or the school system dictates, BUT that does not mean we can't enjoy the weather along with a great book. The week-END treasure for this week is....

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
by
Ann Brashares

Now some of you may be thinking....FLUFF! I will admit that it is a "lite"read, however it is very enjoyable if given the chance. It is story about life, love, friends, and all the troubles along the way. In a very realistic (if filtered) fashion, the lives of four young friends are introduced to the reader. We have...
  • Tibby - future employee of Wallman's, and underestimated video producer
  • Carmen - potential drama queen flying off to South Carolina to visit her dad
  • Lena - understated Mediterranean beauty off to see her family in Greece
  • Bridget - blonde soccer champ off to camp in Baja

They have been friends forever...but summer is sending them in different directions. With their shared fears of growing apart, how can they stay close? Enter the traveling pants! Picked up at a second hand store, their origin holds no likely appeal. The magic is in the fit! Although the girls are close, they are each different in build and yet when the pants are tried on by one and all, they magically fit each girl as if made for her alone. They develop a plan to share to pants throughout the summer along with the adventures had while they were worn. This could get interesting.....

The real storyline is from the heart about the bonds of friendship that we cultivate and how important these people become in our lives. As the first book in the series, I found it a quick but enchanting read which left me ready for the next one and the next one and the next one. Try it out this weekend...you won't be sorry.

Food for Thought

A new addition to my blog...I'll call it Food for Thought. Why? Because I choose to! Just kidding! No, this spot will appear about once a week (or so) to afford a space for random wanderings of the mind as well as suggestions for additional sites, books, or whatever else happens to pop up along the way. So, off on my first wander...

On this "trip", let's visit a newly discovered site called Book Daily. This site was recently emailed to me and is toted as having "book samples for book lovers". Now, I for one am definitely a book lover and so I did not hesitate to click over right away. It's actually a fairly decent concept. You have a virtual bookshelf that allows you to add any title they have on their site for your viewing pleasure. Each day, they will email you the first chapter from the top item on your shelf, thus allowing for semi-random reading on a whim! If you are dying to read it right now, you can also peruse the same said chapter right on their site. Pretty cool, right?

I know what you're thinking...all of the books are either really old or something that no one has ever heard of. Incorrect! They have most of the latest titles as well as old favorites. Stephenie Meyer, James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell, Charlaine Harris, John Sanford....shall I keep going? Just try looking something up or browsing by genre...you are sure to fill your shelf fast. I sure did. (I think I have about 70 on there right now....and growing.)

Until next time...happy reading!

Diamond In the Rough: Just Meg by Kate Russell

Have you ever wanted to disappear? Not just for a moment, but forever...think twice. Forever is a really long time.

A heartbreaking tale of a young girl who just wanted to set things right. Our story takes place in an Australian "hideaway" by the name of Gunya. Sound exotic? Not really, as this is not a resort for the rich and famous, but a psychiatric hospital built to discretely attend to those suffering from life's ailments. Our cast of characters ranges greatly from the outwardly forceful Hannah, to timidly shy Hope, to the unabashedly forward Noelle, and finally our narrator, Meg. They are each there for a reason. Some are more readily accepted, lying just below the surface, while others are much harder to reveal. Throughout their shared time in this facility they each learn about each other as well as themselves, affording them the ability to build an unlikely friendship.

But wait...that's not all! It's not just a story of four lost girls finding themselves, although that would be engaging enough. 'Just Meg' is a story that will touch the hearts of many out there they have or are experiencing situations that are less than ideal and no fault of their own. Behind the journey of discovery, there is a mystery to be solved. During one of the groups daily exercises, they are instructed to find something to distract themselves from there current "plights" and are given the daily paper. Their story of choice involves a powerful man's death and his missing daughter. What really happened? It is their intention to find out.

A roller coaster of emotions as is, author Kate Russell adds an unexpected twist at the end of the story even the most seasoned readers will not see coming. I invite you to step into this book and see where it leads you. You can be certain in the end that there is no "just" about Meg, or anyone else.

New Finds: Drop Dead Delicious by Jill Brock

Hello and welcome back from the Memorial Day weekend! I trust everyone had a safe and wonderful time! Personally, we tried to relax and barbeque....hot dogs, burgers...the works! Yummy! Anywho, back to what you've come for...today's choice.

I came upon this little known title through a book review team I belong to...if I saw it in the store, I may or may not have picked it up based on numerous factors. The time of day, my mood, the title...anything could have swayed my fancy either way. After reading it, however, I would definitely have been sorry to have missed this fun find!

This book reads like a mystery (although I am not particularly drawn to the pure form of this genre) combined with just enough chick-lit making for a rather interesting recipe. The author creates believable characters and places them in "who-done-it" situations that twist and turn from the obvious. The reader is allowed to fall under the story's spell, kick back, and enjoy the ride.

Sound interesting?

Supernatural Prose: Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Yes, I have noticed that my first three postings (this one is obviously included) have stayed within the Young Adult or Teen category. What can I say? There are a lot of really good choices in these aisles now-a-days. To go along with the "widget" I posted earlier, today's recommended title is

For Aislinn, there have always been three rules.
Don't STARE at invisible faeries.
Don't SPEAK to invisible faeries.
Don't ever ATTRACT their attention.

Seems fairly straight forward right....think again. If you are gifted with the SIGHT, you have the unfortunate ability to clearly see faeries for who they, what they are, and bear witness to all the mischievous things they do. Aislinn, as well as her mother and grandmother before her, has this gift. She has fought with it all of her life for as long as she can remember. Appearing normal when you have an eyewitness view to another world is certainly harder than it seems, but the time has come for these two worlds to collide. Keenan, the Summer King, has been seeking out his long lost Summer Queen for many centuries for without her reappearance, his season will surely die out. His mother, Beira, is the Winter Queen and nothing would make her happier than to squelch the last ray of sunlight from her son's court, for if he finds his Summer Queen, her reign and reach will come to an end. Does Aislinn stand a chance against the intent of a King? What about her newly admitted feelings for Seth, the friend on whom she can truly depend? Not to mention Donia, the Winter Girl, who holds allegiance to no one as she follows her part in the game and yet still harbors feelings for her "lost" love...

Filled with action, magic, a love triangle (maybe square?), and ever continuing battle between what's right, what's easy, and what's wrong, I'd definitely recommend this book to young and old alike.

Feel free to leave your comments and feedback.
Until next time...happy reading!

Books to Movies: Coraline by Neil Gaiman

If you haven't seen this one, you've surely seen another...books are being turned into movies more and more frequently these days. Why not? You have an instant storyline that just needs a bit of tweaking before it is big screen worthy. Sounds like a no-brainer. A whole in one! Score!

Okay, now that I'm done with the sports analogies...in my humble opinion, sometimes they tend to "tweak" a little too much. Just think back to one (of I'm sure many) that you've read before viewing and remember all of the "that's not what happened" moments you experienced.

The grand silver screen can also act as a catalyst for getting books more exposure. It can instantly bring old and new titles alike to the forefront of reading lists today. Books you may not have even thought about reading before are given the chance to shine, creating a new legion of fans. One such book turned movie is

Coraline is the unlikely heroine in this dark tinged children's tale. She is a young girl, braver than most, yet slighter than many. One day, she while exploring her home, she happens upon a rather strange oddity. There is a door that leads to....a brick wall. Her mother advises her that it led to the apartment on the opposite at one time, but was sealed to allow other tenants. Happy as one can be with an explanation so mundane, Coraline scampers off to more exciting pursuits fed by her imagination. But alas, when one plans outdoor activities, the weather is not one to cooperate willingly, thus driving her back to her inside exploration endeavors. She searches here and there, high and low, to no avail. Thoroughly bored she comes upon the doorway to nowhere once again, only this time....it leads to SOMEWHERE.

This "other" world holds everything her own beloved home does, with added benefits. Both her "other" parents want nothing more than to play games and have fun with her; the neighbors put on stage shows for their many dogs. Yet, even when presented with all of this fun, Coraline's heart does not manage to stay in it. She can feel that something is very off about this "other" world, especially her "other" mother with her black button eyes. What darkness lurks behind those doll-like eyes? Will Coraline succumb to their nefarious plans?

Classified as children's literature, I do not hesitate in recommending this for all ages. It is well written in a style easily accessible to a child, yet the twists and turns of the engaging plot easily keep older readers coming back for more.

An Oldie but a Goodie - The Forbidden Game by L.J. Smith

Hello, there!
First of all, I would like to thank you for stopping by my new blog! I will try to keep it updated as new works cross my path, so that you might be able to enjoy them for yourself!

To start this off right, I invite you to consider a title from the past...okay, so it only dates back to the early 90's but that's kind of far, right?

In this young adult series, you have a collection of three books entitled The Hunter, The Chase, and The Kill. Sound too ominous for a teen series? Not really (consider the evening news for one). Jenny (main character) is trying to stage the perfect birthday party for her boyfriend, Tom. Solution? Finding the perfect party game to keep it interesting. During her search, she stumbles across a store hidden within a mural on the not-so-perfect side of town and acquires a board game that seems to fit the bill. Little does she know that the gorgeous "young man" that sold her the game is really part of an ancient race of beings from the Shadow Lands and evil is not all he has on his mind. Julian has his sights set on making Jenny his one and only, and he is not one to take no for an answer. Will Jenny be made an unwilling pawn in his "forbidden" game? Or will love, friendship, and selflessness prevail?

Author L.J. Smith has a distinctive writing style...in my opinion, it places the reader in the main characters point of view so well that you can experience each situation as it occurs. The emotions, the surroundings, and the inner turmoil are all described with a true passion for the pen. In fact, in reading a newer favorite, Twilight (series) by Stephenie Meyer, I was reminded very much of L.J. Smith's "voice". She is echoed very well by this newcomer, allowing her past publications to be shared by a new generation.

Title:  Memetastic Award
Received:  01/28/11
From:  Marcie @ To Read or Not To Read

This award is for...
...umm, it's kind of unclear but I think it's mainly to spread a smile across the miles and see just how far one award can travel.  For more insight, check the rules that follow...

Rules:
(These are word for word from the original author's post.  For their content, do not blame me...I am merely the recipient and messenger.  ^_^)
“1. You must proudly display the absolutely disgusting graphic that I have created for these purposes (put it in your post, you don’t have to put it in your sidebar, I think that would seriously be asking too much). It’s so bad that not only did I use COMIC SANS, but there’s even a little jumping, celebrating kitten down there at the bottom. It’s horrifying! But its presence in your award celebration is crucial to the memetastic process we’re creating here. If you need a higher resolution version… I totally have one!!

2. You must list 5 things about yourself, and 4 of them must be bold-faced lies. Just make some shit up, we’ll never know; one of them has to be true, though. Of course, nobody will ever know the difference, so we’re just on the honor system here. I trust you. Except for the 4 that you lied about, you lying bastards! But don’t go crazy trying to think of stuff, you’ll see by the example I’ve set below that we’re not really interested in quality here.
3. You must pass this award on to 5 bloggers that you either like or don’t like or don’t really have much of an opinion about. I don’t care who you pick, and nobody needs to know why. I mean, you can give a reason if you want, but I don’t really care.
4. If you fail to follow any of the above rules, I will hunt you down and harass you incessantly until you either block me on Twitter or ban my IP address from visiting your blog. I don’t know if you can actually do that last thing, but I will become so annoying to you that you will actually go out and hire an IT professional to train you on how to ban IP addresses just so that I’ll leave you alone. I’m serious. I’m going to do these things.
5. This one isn’t actually a rule, but once you do the above, please come back here and link up to the Memetastic Hop so that I can keep track of where this thing goes.”

Title:  Worth Your Weight in a 'Gator Battle Award
Received:  02/18/11
From:  Alexia at Alexia's Books and Such

This award...
...was created in honor of (at least according to them) the real stars from “Alien Tango”. No, not Katherine “Kitty” Katt or Jeff Martini. Alliflash and Gigantagator, Alligators Extraordinaire!

The “Worth Your Weight in a ‘Gator Battle Award” is only given to the wily, the brave, and the cheeky, so get down with your bad self, you’re deemed worthy to run with the A-C’s!
Now you get to spread the awesome by nominating other bloggers who would also be worth their weight in a ‘gator battle. Battling ‘gators is not for sissies or wimps -- only the strong survive -- so choose wisely!

Rules...
1.Slap the graphic on your blog post.

2.Give link props to the person who gave you the award (don’t rile a ‘gator fighter -- it’s dangerous).
3.Spread the awesome and nominate five (5) other bloggers who you think will be worth their weight in a ‘gator battle.
4.Let the recipients know they’ve won this honor on their blogs.

Nutritional Content: Books Reviewed At-A-Glance

Hello, and welcome to the Nutritional Content section of Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers! You are probably wondering what in the world a page like this is doing on a book blog, right? If you've been perusing this site for a bit, you will have noticed the theme corresponding with the blog name...that being said, I ask you one question. What goes into any recipe to create the nutritional content? Ingredients! In this case, the books that are reviewed and discussed, so long story short, this page will give you a listing alphabetized by book title of those featured throughout my site, as well as the link to that review.  If an author interview exists, that link will be included through the author's name.

PLEASE NOTE: If the word THE appears first in the title, look for that book under the next word. (okay, I'm known for long winded tales not short stories, sorry!) If you have any questions, suggestions, or requests, feel free to post a comment on a current feature!
As always....happy reading!

**ALSO...this list is in need of some serious TLC.  If you are looking for a review of a particular title, please utilize the SEARCH option in the right hand sidebar.**
